As a school that prioritizes childcare in Brampton, Ontario, one of the things that hinder us from achieving our goal is when learners are being less cooperative in class and are displaying negative behaviors. As educators, we would like to manage their tantrums, inability to focus, and tendency to procrastinate. But, how are we going to make this happen?
Educators who promote a child-centered approach would do the following:
- Model the behavior.
When children reach 4-5 years of age, their absorbent mind is crystallized. During this time, their ability to learn is at its peak. When this happens, they’re able to learn and mimic your behaviors faster and easier. Thus, make sure you model the right behavior.
- Pay attention.
When children feel like you’re not open to listening or they’re not welcome to express their emotions, they tend to manifest unintentional behaviors.
- Be nice but have authority over them.
Tell them nicely that their behavior is bad and when you say that they’ll be punished the next time, do it. This way, they will respect you and follow your rules.
- Avoid preaching.
No one likes a nagger and children will appreciate you more when you’re there for them to guide, not to instruct. Allow them to decide for themselves, especially if they’re doing activities to make them responsible for their actions.
