Strategies to Encourage Healthy Eating Habits in Kids

Today, processed foods have taken over our eating habits. Combined with technology and a generation that spends less time outdoors, healthy living has become a challenge for kids. However, parents can help by encouraging healthy eating habits at home.

As an infant care provider, we will discuss strategies to promote healthy eating habits in children:

  • Provide different options.

    Children do not like to be forced to do something, especially toddlers and kids who want to establish their independence. This holds at the kitchen table as well. Although the choice between apple slices and a sandwich may not seem like much, it gives the autonomy that children crave while still allowing you to provide toddler care and give you control of their nutrition.

  • Allow them to create their plates.

    Another way to let your children exercise independence while getting them interested in trying new foods is to let them create their plates. Utilize a holistic approach to meal planning by including protein, nutrients, vegetables, fruits, and calcium-rich food. By giving your children options within those categories, they get to exercise choices while still receiving the nutritional components they need.

  • Include your kids while cooking.

    Children are more likely to try a new food if they have a hand at making it. When cooking, assign basic tasks like stirring a bowl or tossing a salad. As children perform these simple tasks, they get to see how full meals come together and give them a primer for preparing their balanced meals as they grow older.
