Easy STEM Activities to Spark Your Child’s Curiosity

The sciences may be complex subject areas but these do not have to be taught in a boring or intimidating way. STEM or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics can be taught in a more age-appropriate way. There are simple and engaging STEM-inspired activities that ignite a child’s curiosity and passion for these subjects.

You can start simple. Encourage your child to construct using everyday items like wooden blocks, plastic cups, or spaghetti and marshmallows. This promotes engineering skills and problem-solving. Kids in our daycare in Ontario can use and play around with the toys or materials within their reach.

At home, children can discover basic chemistry in the kitchen. Create a volcano with baking soda and vinegar or explore the density of liquids by making a rainbow in a jar. Gardening is also a good way to learn. Planting seeds and tending to a garden introduces biology and environmental science. Learn about plant growth, photosynthesis, and environmental stewardship.

Physics may sound complex but its principles can be relatively simple. Teach physics with simple machines like levers, pulleys, and inclined planes using household objects to build models. There is nothing simpler and more direct than taking a walk outside. Give your child the opportunity to learn STEM in a holistic classroom environment.
